In the beginning… In a small kitchenette ….somewhere far far away…well not that far really…in a place called Nannup something beautiful happened. I managed to make a heat balm that is 100% Natural. No nasties and more importantly no more contact dermatitis from the petroleum products in “traditional” heat balms. It was to use on my clients in my Remedial massage clinic. I loved it so much I made a huge batch of it and gave it to family and friends for Christmas gifts. Then clients started asking for it. I wanted to label it and didn’t know what to call it…so we came up with “Nannup Tiger Balm.” And I designed a label with the elusive Nannup Tiger (Thylacine) on it. Which was perfect…in Nannup. But then other towns asked to stock it and before we knew it we had several stockists in the South West of Western Australia. It was so exciting!
It was in Nannup that we decided to home school our son. Home schooling can be isolating for some children, but not so much when your Dad runs a Caravan Park. Inclusive of the largest playground in town and a constant stream of new faces. One day after rummaging through a book of science experiments we found the perfect experiment. We collected a few pine cones, candles and a few key ingredients from the local hardware store. We covered each pine cone in melted wax and different salts and took them to the communal fire in the middle of the caravan park that night. The idea was to observe how the different salts changed the colours of the flames in the fire. They worked a treat. Everyone around the fire had a great time! The most impressive salt was the copper sulphate with its greens and blues. However we found it short lived and very stinky and we were very cautious with it because it is toxic. We started researching products available in Australia that changed the colours of the flames in a fire. Mainly to on sell at the caravan park. There were a couple of brands available but they all had copper sulphate as their active ingredient. Then we found Colourful Fire. It sounded perfect! All the fun without Copper Sulphate! No bad odour and no toxic fumes! The only problem was….it was in the USA! So we rang them. Then Colourful Fire Australia was born!
What was the magic recipe for the Start of Holistics In House: A new year…TWO awesome products…TWO smallish tax returns and ONE MASSIVE CHALLENGE! The challenge was to both spend equal amounts on each of our products and develop each brand and see who could be the most successful. Here’s a crazy thought he says…. Imagine being able to travel around Australia now…not in twenty years…not when the kids have grown …right now! Not just for the school holidays…not just for “the Lap” …but Full time. Is that even possible? Well…We don’t know if it is yet. But we are giving it our best shot!
We bought ourselves a Ford Tragic van (that’s not a typo) and an awesome Expanda Caravan and set off on our adventure. We started off doing market stalls and expos. Dragging our son and our newborn daughter out of bed at 4am to set up at a local car boot sale to advertise our wares. We soon discovered what everyone else had seen for years. We were nuts! It was soon after this that we realised we needed help selling our products. We decided to offer them wholesale. We realised that with our bus and the van we could distribute our products throughout Western Australia whilst enjoying travelling around and touring the countryside. After picking up retailers around the South West of the state we decided to head North. But in the North they did not know the tale of the Nannup Tiger…so we rebranded to the iconic Red Dog. We also introduced 4 new products to the Natural products range. It was at this point we seriously convinced ourselves that we had perfected an amazing business model…we had the perfect plan…we were now an independent Australian business that could fund an endless adventure around the whole of Australia….and it was going to be …BUT what can I say..? life got in the way!
Most businesses fail in the first year…we made it…just. In its second year we blew a tyre, I lost my Mum, blew another 4 tyres, repaired our house, broke down, ran out of money, nearly lost our house, broke down, ran out of money, broke down, blew up our Ford Tragic and also managed to squeeze in or rather “out” another baby. So….the business model needs a bit of tweeking…but we are still here. We are yet to get to the most populated parts of this country. The 2017 agenda is to successfully distribute our products throughout Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. We cant wait! We love what we do. It is and always will be an adventure. Our adventure. If you want to see more drama unfold this year follow us on our adventure HERE . Please help us out by telling your friends and family how great our products are. If you have time please leave a review. We are a small Australian business and we only sell to Australian businesses. Remember to support Australian businesses or they will disappear. If you see us on the road please come and say Hello.
